PEER SUMMIT ‘24 Delivered January 19th, 2024

You Are All Pyros

Poetry is a place visited, sacred ground,

And proof of the journey is possible with just sound

That noise that words make, experience translated, that lights a fire with others

The proof of work is in the proof of words, as genuine as food from a mother

Usually from a person, who came back after drinking from a well of sadness,

or Elysium or Valhalla, or who went and sat in the grace of stillness

poetry was once the relic of this fully experienced trip,

It stood for something, a genuine gift from the voyage on life’s ship

Is it all that, still? Or did I just hit enter, after the right prompt?

My solution to AI vs poetry dilemma tonight,  hit me like a giddy figment of brilliance,

I could see, as the ancients say, the Odos, the way, a chance

To make a chess move here, to show I shredded this out,

That I turned up the kilowatts and didn’t just ask a wiki how

That I somehow got the theta waves all cross layered through my mind

(That’s the trick to finding fluency underneath this thick rind)

I would, like the secret fable of Runa create something immutably rare

Like super rare or even raribly rare to leave every doubt bare

See I would just use words from the projects of my talented squad attending

To show the AI didn’t create this poetry framework but that it is ascending

All skaled up in my own little lab of notional ideas,

It’d be like planting a 100 acres of redwoods as proof of a forest,

You could launch your Bard grifter insults but I would pass the test

As if I wrote this dodging ambush behind a lonely tree in a savanna at the permian start

Like when the continents were panga, and poems weren’t available at the GPT Mart

Think of the amity we fine sapiens ar weaving

When no jacked ai bit bot is in here deceiving

But then how do I wallet connect to 1K(x), Multicoin Gensyn or hinkal  in plain text

Without breaking the hermetic seal on my orange moonwalker espresso

(Sorry had to jam those last ones in there somehow, I just feel it deep in my Netcore

But even the AI Demigods, I think, could make a credibly neutral stanza

And like a stealthy stalking panthera  pounce on my planza

We’re all paying that tax right now, right, not knowing what is real or fake

Is that a truly distributed protocol or did you just wake and bake then bake a fake?

Philosophers will tell you there are three forms of truth,

Correspondence, coherence and pragmatism

What corresponds to a shared reality,

what coheres in a closed system

and baby, whatever works for you

The lack of certainty of what can be trusted in the common square

Feels to have grown exponentially, like there ain’t nobody who cares

and the emotion caused by epistemic uncertainty is anxiety

Makes me miss the days of a one manufactured consent society

You know the one, 3 network stations, and one old white guy

He gets to decide what you care about and what makes you cry

Now there’s a fab of truth and consent on every corner

There’s content for young and old, the domestic and foreigner

And the industry accused most often of being the deep fake

Is, wait, we take that cake?

OK, it has happened, like all new things crypto has had

Missteps, rug pulls, fraud and well, some things go bad

But as we know from the data all locked unhackably on chain

most of this industry is good, people willing to go through pain

To build something lasting, something enduring, something helpful

The furthest thing from fake actually, in fact is feels truthful

And Truth always wins, eventually

Its may just be that in the age of ubiquitous digital counterfeit,

It’s only crypto that can scarcify and verify down to the single bit

And make desoc that doesn’t pilfer your content for all you’ve got

and desci and depin? that’s about that’s the realist ride on the lot!

time stamp a device, lock a contract on a ledger, that’s cooler than the Fonz

create an entire economy end to end with reliable global provenance,

In a world of censorship, debasement, and surveillance

Optimism and truth in this is my answer to unknowns and chance

And don’t you think, it’s such a great time

To build an application and not just hodl and mine?

The kindling is set, the infra is stoked,

I’ve even heard cheering in the distance from reg folk

You pyros, you truth tellers, you dreamers, you still few

A lot of people this weekend are talking about fire

We’ve had a relationship for 2 million years with fire

It’s one of our oldest human connections with a technology

even though the first 1.9 million years is boring chronology

hard to control and a dangerous UI, but it could keep us warm and cook food,

some protection and social bonding, OK maybe slightly more than just one good

Then, pow, chemistry, Industrial Revolution and now an entire society

that uses fire everyday in products small and in weapons mighty

Like fire, crypto was hard to use at first, hard to hold quite right,

early on only good for one thing, hard to see all the products in sight

Crypto is new but it feels like an old technology

and tuned and harnessed, can light up like a symphony

I have to you tell you why you are all pyros

Fire has two main processes, happening at first in order and later in parallel,

The first is Pyrolysis, the warming antechamber, that first bit of smell

No light, just complex molecules broken down into simpler parts

It is the underappreciated but truly important way to start

It’s chemical decomposition absolutely necessary for organic material

To eventually create heat, light and then float up to the sky ethereal

When combustion and light show up, it is passion, the thing everyone gets excited about

But Pyrolysis must continue, preparing the next bit of fuel to let this fire keep its shout

They both use heat but Pyro is sustaining without oxygen, it’s coming from inside

Combustion is heat and fuel combining with the outside, it is the big payoff ride

Everyone gets warm and happy but none of it possible without spark’s sire

Who keeps doing even after the first bright lights begin in a hard earned fire

When you think of this summit I want you think Jared called us all Pyros and he was right!

How to build a fire:

Before chopping wood or gathering kindling, think long and hard about the why,

This will make your effort clean and fill your body with a lot of try

Think how big you want it to burn, you don’t need the full kit

but before it grows too big it’s easier to right size the pit

Believe in yourself and have confidence you can show

Then get campfire mates to help with what you don’t know

Learn to lead while listening to everyone’s suggestion

and make sure you offer to share future combustion

When placing kindling don’t obsess with how each piece lie

But do ensure that it is all dry

When placing logs leave space between the logs and space in your day,

both you and your fire need lots of oxygen or you will both decay

Remember to smile this makes every fire warmer

If your fire starts to go out, ask for help

Despite everyone’s best effort some fires will go out, remember, that night, to still enjoy the stars in the sky

Your fire, as some do, may turn into a raging bonfire, remember, that night, to still enjoy the stars in the sky

And when look at those stars, remember that a star is just fire pushing out against it’s own gravity

And a startup is just desire pushing out against its otherwise destiny

And a startup is just desire pushing out against its otherwise destiny

You pyros, you truth tellers, you dreamers you still few

Thank you for trying  and doing all that you do

— Jared Hutchings
